Learning More About Your 401k

by admin on September 4, 2010

Everybody seems to have a 401k retirement plan and everyone follows the 401k advice which they hear that tells them to always invest their money into the plan. So they keep investing into it.Yet there are very few people who actually know a lot about it.  They are suppose to be using it to build their financial future and prepare for retirement, but nobody really cares about it until it is too late.

So, before you just follow the crowd here are some basic 401k information.

You probably know all about the tax benefits.Your money is taken out of your paycheck before it is taxed and then it is invested for your future, but where is it invested into?

The majority of the time that money is just used to invest into mutual funds.  It may be that the funds which you are investing your money into are seriously underperforming the market. After all most funds are in the business of selling not investing. Most of them do not make money only if you do, but they do make money as long as you are staying with them.

That is why if you have the time and want to learn you can go much farther by managing your money yourself.  If your company offers a self directed 401k option where you can decide where your money is going to be invested into then it is defiantly something to consider.

Another thing to consider is investing into real estate with your 401k in addition to simply investing into stocks.  Some plans will only let you invest into funds that invest into stocks, but not all.  Some plans will even allow you to invest your money into a REIT or a real estate investment trust.

A REIT is simply a trust which invest its money into real estate.  The company basically takes money invested into it and buy things like apartment buildings, and commercial buildings. The investors make money as the trust makes money.

This can be great for diversification purposes because you become less dependent on what happens in one market.
